One of Perth’s most historic suburbs, Claremont on the Swan River was originally inhabited by the Noongar Aboriginal Tribe, which fished and hunted waterfowl in the area. European settlers, however, only began to realize the potential of the Claremont area in 1830, when a settler by the name of John Butler established an inn in the area, in order to cater for the needs of travellers on the road to Freemantle.
Becoming more established as a settlement between 1850 and 1862, Claremont originally grew as a suburb thanks to the building of the Freemantle Road itself and the arrival of prominent settler families such as the Triggs, Sandovers, and Stirlings.
Today, the Claremont area is averages around 8,000 permanent residents and is home to attractions such as the Freshwater Bay Museum and the popular spectacle of Perth’s Claremont Showgrounds.
