Moving in Perth is challenging but moving house when you have children is especially tough. Kids will have to get used to new friends, a new home and sometimes a new school. For some kids it can be incredibly unnerving.
If you are moving with your children, you need to take special care to make sure they are comfortable with the change.
- Tell them as soon as possible – Break it to your kids as soon as you can, so they aren’t surprised when it’s time to move. Don’t wait until the last minute to tell them.
- Let them help – If you haven’t already found a new house, bring your kids with you to “help” pick one out. If you’ve already selected a home then let them choose their room.
- Explain what to expect – Talk to your kids in as much as possible about the new suburb, school, shops and parks. The more they know, the less stressed they’ll be.
- Move at a good time – If possible move on a date that will give your children a few weeks to get acquainted with your new home and surroundings before they start school, such as during the summer or winter break.
Moving House Day
Kids are likely to be quite emotional on moving day and you won’t exactly be in the right mindset to deal with them. It’s best to plan ahead and talk to your children about what needs to be done on moving day.
If you have very young children (under six), it might be worth leaving them in the care of friends or family. Moving heavy items can be dangerous and you don’t want your children getting in the way.
If your children are a little older you might try to involve them in the moving process. Moving house is a big job and one that can involve the whole family so give them a few little jobs to do. As stressful as moving can be it is also an exciting day and kids will love taking that little bit of responsibility.
